Assynt Activities

This coming weekend should see the start of this year's Mendip Migration to Taigh nam Famh, Assynt and the Alt. Peter Dowswell and Ivan will travel to Assynt on Friday to top up the supplies and stay till Monday. If enough members join us a digging trip to Rana is on the cards.

Our southern contingent is expecting to arrive from Sunday onwards and to be in residence through the next weekend ie 4/5th May. Pete hasn't accepted bookings for any other large groups so there shouldn't be any overcrowding this time.

SCRO Exercise

The joint SCRO / Oban Mountain Rescue Team exercise on Sunday 5th May is planned for Glen Creran starting from the car park at the end of the track.

We spent a pleasant day on Sunday 14th April reacquainting ourselves with some of the Glen Creran caves and deciding on the scenario for the exercise. We used GPS to measure the positions of the caves found for the next Appin guide, but there are many still to find again and measure. It would also be better to get several independent measurements for each entrance so they can be averaged. So if you have a GPS set bring it with you and help us pin down the entrances.

A machete might also be an advantage as the paths have not been used for some time and are seriously overgrown in places. Timber extraction and new deer fences have not helped navigability much either!

The Vorlich Fissures

A weak caving excuse for a long walk to an excessive altitude will present itself on Sunday 23rd June. Ivan is planning to complete his second round of the Munros that day on Ben Vorlich - the one to the west of Loch Lomond. Somewhere below the summit we could search for the Vorlich Fissures. To quote the SMC guide - 'high up on Ben Vorlich above the Loch Sloy dam the Vorlich Fissures are the most remote and least visited of Arrochar's natural mountain refuges.' I've no idea - yet - of their precise location. All are welcome to join in, and more details of start time & place and post-walk watering hole will be available later. Let Ivan know if you plan to join the search.

GSG Bulletin & Overdue Subscriptions

The latest GSG Bulletin is about to be printed and distributed to all paid up GSG members. If you haven't yet coughed up your annual subscription do it now, otherwise you will be removed from the membership list, won't receive any more Bulletins or Newsletters and will be demoted to the non-members email distribution list! You'll also have to pay non-members rates at the hut.
