DURC Library Contents
- The Complete Alpine Experience B.M.C. Video
- Spot the sponsors ! Not an excellent video, but this contains a lot of
info for those contemplating going to the Alps, what you need and what you
can expect from glacial travel, avalanches, rope work etc.
- Climbing Rock B.M.C. Video
- Climbing Rock B.M.C. Booklet
- These two items go together and follow the exploits of two novice climbers who move away from indoor climbing walls to the Great Outdoors and all it has to offer. This video and book takes you through all the possible mistakes you encounter as a novice / experienced climber, from seconding to leading. The video is not patronising and personally I was impressed and would highly recommend this one.
- New Climbers B.M.C. Booklet
- This booklet is for new rock climbers, telling you everything you ever wanted to know but were afraid to ask about the topic.
- Climbing Wall Directory B.M.C. Booklet
- As its name suggests, this is a small booklet giving details of all the indoor climbing walls in the UK and Ireland. Prices may vary but essentially this is a good reference point if you plan on spending some time in a different part of the country and find your harness and boots are going to travel with you.
- Technical committee Crampons B.M.C. Booklet
- Info on crampons, types available, and which bests suits your own boots for the terrain you want to use them on.
- Ropes B.M.C. Booklet
- Knots B.M.C. Booklet
- Two booklets covering how to look after and care for your ropes, the different types available, how they are composed etc. and how to tie every knot you ever needed to know and some you don't !
- B.M.C. Travel & Activity Insurance Guide B.M.C. Booklet
- Essential if planning a trip abroad (as a member of the BMC you also get good discounts on huts in the Alps).
Although other insurance can be purchased this is a good starting point and one I have personally made use of.
(Ed. Note remember to carry your insurance with you when climbing)
- The Alpine Pack B.M.C. Booklet
- The Winter Pack B.M.C. Booklet
- These two books essentially cover everything needed in both Alpine and Scottish winter conditions, highly recommended.
- Winter Skills MCofS Booklet
- You should have received one of these in your fresher packs, if not let a
committee member know, and we'll get you one.
- Safety on the Mountains S.S.S.S. Video
- A good video going behind the scenes of the rescue services showing how
accidents happen and how they can be avoided. I was impressed with this one,
although it went a bit flat towards the end.
Remember these items are there for you, so make use of them.
If you do not have a video player you can use the one in the library
free of charge.
