Visible
Visible light extends roughly from 400nm (violet) to 700nm (red). There is
obviously some overlap but as a guide the colours fall into these regions:
- Violet: 400-430 nm
- Indigo: 430-450 nm
- Blue: 450-500 nm
- Green: 500-570 nm
- Yellow: 570-590 nm
- Orange: 590-610 nm
- Red: 610-700 nm
Infra-Red
In comparison to visible, the infra-red region is quite large and has the
following regions. Note that 1µm is 1000 times longer than 1nm.
- Near (NIR): 0.7 to 1.5 µm
- Short wavelength (SWIR): 1.5 to 3 µm
- Mid wavelength (MWIR): 3 to 8 µm
- Long wavelength (LWIR): 8 to 15 µm
- Far infra-red (FIR): longer than 15µm
Microwaves and Radio Waves
Radio waves are typically from 10cm to 10km wavelength. Microwaves are much
shorter, from 1mm to 1m wavelength. The microwave regions are:
- Ka band: 0.75 to 1.1cm (26.5 to 40 GHz frequency)
- K band: 1.1 to 1.7cm (18 to 26.5 GHz)
- Ku band: 1.7 to 2.4cm (12.5 to 18 GHz)
- X band: 2.4 to 3.8cm (8 to 12.5 GHz)
- C band: 3.8 to 7.5cm (4 to 8 GHz)
- S band: 7.5 to 15cm (2 to 4 GHz)
- L band: 15 to 30cm (1 to 2 GHz)
- P band: 30 to 100cm (0.3 to 1 GHz)
