Jan Mayen is a volcanic island which lies between the Greenland and Norwegian Seas. On the northeastern part of the island is the active Beerenberg volcano the top of which is 2,277m above sea level. As cloud passes around the higher parts of this island it creates a stream of eddies trailing out for hundreds of miles.
