Ice in the White Sea is thawing and breaking up and flowing northwards into the Barents Sea. Areas of the Gulfs' of Bothnia and Finland are ice covered with fissures and ship icebreaker paths visible in both. Lakes in northwest Russia including the two largest European lakes, Ladoga and Onega are frozen as is Lake Peipus on the Estonian Russian border. The Baltic countries, Scandinavia and northwestern Russia show extensive snow coverage.
