There is a swathe of Saharan dust from Algeria across the Mediterranean, between the Balearic island of Menorca and the west coast of Sardinia, to the south of France. The Po valley in Northern Italy is obscured by cloud and fog which is hemmed in by the Alps in the north and the Appennines to the south. There is also coastal sediment and runoff in the Bay of Biscay from the River Gironde.
