When this image was received the eye of Hurricane Maria was passing offshore of the north-eastern coast of the Dominican Republic. Maria was at this time tracking in a north-westerly direction approximately 70 miles north of Punta Cana as a Category 3 storm (Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale) with a 1-minute sustained average wind speed of 100 knots (115.2 mph) and gusts of 120 knots (138.2 mph). Tropical Storm Jose was moving eastwards with a 1-minute sustained average wind speed of 50 knots (57.6 mph) and gusts of 60 knots (69.1 mph) about 150 miles south-east of Nantucket, Massachusetts.
