Hurricane Sandy tracks north-eastwards towards the east coast of the United States of America as a Category 1 storm (Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale) with a 1-minute sustained average wind speed of 65 knots (74.9 mph) and gusts of 80 knots (92.2 mph). Sandy was at this time about 290 nautical miles east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina and 470 nautical miles south south-east of New York City according to the National Hurricane Center.
